World Book Day at Queen Eleanor Academy: Celebrating Reading for Pleasure

World Book Day at Queen Eleanor Academy was a wonderful celebration of stories, imagination and - most importantly - our shared commitment to reading for pleasure. Across the day, children and staff took part in a range of activities designed to bring books to life and strengthen our whole-school love of reading.

A Book Breakfast with Families

We began the day with a special Book Breakfast, inviting parents and carers into school to enjoy breakfast with their child and share a favourite book together. Classrooms were filled with the calm buzz of children reading alongside family members and staff -  an ideal start to a day focused on the joy of books. This event is an important part of our ongoing initiative to engender a love of reading, and it was fantastic to see so many families joining in.

The “Masked Reader” Challenge

One of the highlights of the day was our Masked Reader competition. Staff members each read an extract - while disguising their voices - and children had to work out who was behind the reading. There was plenty of laughter (and some very convincing performances), as pupils listened carefully for clues and made their best guesses.

Dressing Up as Favourite Characters

Children and staff arrived dressed as characters from some of their favourite books, bringing the school corridors to life with creative costumes and brilliant book choices. It was lovely to hear pupils confidently explaining who they were, what their character was like, and why they loved that story.

House Quiz: Books in Class and Beyond

Our house competition brought pupils together for a lively quiz, testing knowledge of the books children are currently reading in class, and a wider range of well-known fictional characters, authors and stories.

It was a great way to celebrate reading as a shared experience across the school, with teamwork, friendly competition and lots of thoughtful discussion about books.

Sharing Stories by Julia Donaldson

Throughout the day, every class also enjoyed reading books by Julia Donaldson, author of The Gruffalo. Her stories provided a perfect focus for shared reading, discussion and enjoyment, reminding us all of how powerful a great story can be.

A huge thank you to all the families who joined us for our Book Breakfast and well done to every pupil for taking part with such energy and enthusiasm. Days like these help us build a culture of reading for pleasure at Queen Eleanor Academy where books are celebrated, shared and enjoyed by everyone.
